Backstory
Marko is of Russian descent, born in 1482 in Kiev. Second son to a wealthy merchant, Evan Pavelov, Marko moved to Venice, Italy when he was five years old as his father started negotiations for a direct sea-trading route between Venice and Kiev (via Constantinople). Marko's brother, Stefan, remained in Kiev to run the shipping business there.
Ignored by his father, Marko was close to his mother, who helped him become educated in the finest universities of Venice and London. During his travels to London, Marko became interested in the sea — especially in the science and art of cartography. The recent voyages of Columbus spurred Marko's interest in cartography.
